A New Beginning: Rehabilitated Barred Owl is Released

Yesterday I was very privileged to be able to witness a good news story.    A Barred Owl was released back into its home territory after being rehabilitated at Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee.   Norma, who is a volunteer driver for the centre, called me and asked me if I would like to witness the owl’s release and take some photos.   Of course I was very interested, and grateful to her for calling me.

Interestingly, owls must be released within their home range of less than 3 kilometres from where they are found.    This one was found hit by a car near a train overpass.   We didn’t want to release it right there of course but found a quiet residential area with woods and a stream within less than a kilometre of where the owl was rescued to release it.   I will just let the photos tell the rest of the story.   It was wonderful to witness.

  2. Great pictures. The first Barred owl I saw was sitting while in a class at Peterboroughs Teacher’s College. It came and sat right out side our window. Needless to say Mr Nellighan had it made for a class. We were enthralled .He allowed us to enjoy the rare moment.
